Reader Tips

A big thanks to everyone for sending me tips and links via email and in the comments!  Here are a few tips which I’ve not written about previously.

1.   Free Accor A-Club Gold Status

JC writes in about free Accor Hotel A-club Gold status when you use promotion code “AMEXSING10″ while registering for an Accor account.

Priority Club Insider also wrote about this.  Gold status doesn’t get you much, but you may be able to status match it to other hotels’ entry level status.

2.   Restaurant.com 80% off coupon

deltagoldflyer writes in that using “FALL” will get you 80% off on a restaurant.com coupon.

This is a cheap way to get another US Air Grand Slam hit for $2.  Just buy a Restaurant.com certificate for $2 ($10 less 80% discount) through the Thanks Again website.

Remember to register for the US Air Grand Slam before buying the Restaurant.com certificate!

There is also a way to earn $5 cash back via this post on Milepoint, but you need $20 in cash back to get a cash back payment.

3.   Transfer Continental miles to Amtrak

Jose M lets us know about a Slickdeals thread on converting Continental miles to Amtrak in a 1:1 ratio.

This may make sense for some since you can redeem 3,000 Amtrak points for ~$100 1-way tickets in the Northeast corridor.

Amtrak also has a 50% bonus on buying points which gets over on Friday.

  1. If you go to restaurant.com today, you can get REALLY good deals on gift certificates to restaurants in the Wilm and RDU area. Check it out!

  2. Nice! There is a 90% off promo code for restaurant.com for today only 9/29. Promo Code = WOW

Also, Amtrak is having a “Double Take” promotion now for the fall that will give you double points until 11/23. You have to register before you travel at https://www.amtrakguestrewards.com/home/index

  3. Be careful with restaurant.com promo codes. Some of them require a minimum spending of $100. And you are not finding it out until much later in the process.

  4. @Mary Alice – 90% is better than 80%! Too bad it is just for one day!

@Eugene – I use the promo codes for the restaurant certificates which always seem to work. The gift cards are trickier though.

  5. In this case I will provide more specific info. I used promo code ENJOY. A gift card I received required $100 minimum spending. I found it out about it only after receiving the e-mail confirmation. May be it is something specific to this code. Just wanted to make it known. In my case the average plate in the restaurant in question is about $12. So, it is not easy to get all the to $100.

  6. For Thanksagain hit, you could get a free hit by liking them on Facebook (100 DM bonus miles will be given)

  7. @GransSlammer, could you please provide a link or steps that could lead to the webpage to receive the Thanksagain hit? Thanks for the tip.

  9. My tip. It’s pretty inexpensive to generate 16 hits (25K miles) for the US Airways grand slam promo. Even if you already plan to do 36+ hits for yourself or your partner, don’t forget about the low hanging fruit for mom and dad, the kids, etc. The first 16 hits generate 25K miles and can be had for less than $100. That’s under 0.25 cents per mile.

US Airways Credit or Debit Card Use (easy hits if they have one or both)
    3 Toolbar Searches (free)
    Points.com Swap (4 AA miles )
    Magazines for Miles (400-500 miles)
    ShareBuilder (easy signup)
    Audience Rewards (easy trivia)
Shopping Mall ($1 itunes, any amazon purchase, etc.)
    Thanks Again ($2)
    Dividend Miles Dining ($2 soda)
SuperShuttle ($4 no show w/ coupon)
    OfficeMax ($10)
    Vinesse ($10)
    SkyMall ($10)
    1800Flowers ($13)
    Biscoff ($16)
    TrackItBack.com ($25)
    e-Miles (time – assuming you can’t get 16 from the above)above)

  10. Oops, looks like my math was off. It’s closer to 0.35 cents per mile but basically the biggest bang for the buck comes from the first 16 hits. If you have a family member that wants miles without a lot of effort, it really makes sense for them to invest $100. You can even do most of it for them. ;)
