Hi Everyone – this is Emily!   Every now and then,  I will share travel stories on the blog.

Redeem Miles & Points

I grew up in a middle-class home, with very loving, generous parents.

My mother, who grew up very poor as a child, worked with my dad at the local phone company.

Although we were comfortable, and always had food and clothing, we rarely had money to go on vacations.

Occasionally, we would drive to local theme parks like Sea World or Cedar Point, but we never went to, say, Disney World.  Or even Florida or Hawaii for that matter, and certainly not to exotic places like India or Brazil!

As a child, I loved reading books and watching movies.

I prayed and hoped that one day, I too, would get to see the exotic elephants and bejeweled rajas with their sequins and silks which I read about in The Secret Garden!

My interest in traveling only grew when I saw movies like Beauty & the Beast and Aladdin.  I really wanted to see the big cities and provincial towns, fly on magic carpets, and meet the handsome princes, just like Belle and Jasmine did!

But, even though I graduated college and have a great career,  I never even dreamed of being able to travel in Europe and Asia for 3 months between jobs or of flying in First Class.

Now, thanks to Daraius’ miles and points hobby, I’ve been able to see and do things I never thought possible.  I’ll admit it – I didn’t see how opening bank accounts and applying for credit cards would open travel opportunities!

I’ve seen many big cities like Sao Paulo, Brazil, small towns like Eger, Hungary, tasted some amazing food like chicken with Riesling sauce in France, ridden a camel in India, and tasted many new delicious drinks like Ginja in Portugal.

I even got to fly on my Magic Carpet!First Class with British and Jet Airlines!

But the best part of all was meeting old and new friends.  I met my French pen-pal after 10 years of correspondence and Tibor, a Romanian artist, who over dinner, shared with us his struggles of life after communism.

I’m writing this to show you – that thanks to our miles and point hobby –  you too, can have the same experiences (Big Travel with Small Money) which Daraius and I appreciate so much.

I will never forget the memories we made in Europe, Asia, & South America.  And isn’t having unforgettable experiences what life is all about?!

  5. Emily, your experience growing up is very similar to mine. Our family trips basically included a 12 hour drive to Kansas each year to visit my father’s family and that was it. We never, ever took a plane or anything like that. It is amazing to grow up and be able to go to those places and do those things you dreamed about growing up.

  6. Hi Melissa, Thanks for the comment! It really amazing to have opportunities that I could only dream of growing up. It also thrills me that I can give back to my parents and fly them places they want to visit.

  8. I’ve been reading this blog for a year, but just saw this post for the first time. What a touching story! I love the magic carpet anology and I agree – flying first class on BA is much better than flying on a magic carpet. 🙂 So beautifully told.

While I was lucky enough to grow up in europe and visit many countries nearby, living in the US has restricted my travel to mostly domestic trips. And those domestic flights are nothing like flying internationally…

  9. Nicely written, Emily.

  10. @ Ariana and Tony- Thanks for the kind words. I feel so lucky that I’ve been able to travel and experience the world. I’m even luckier that I can bring along my family and friends and try to give back to them for always being there for me.
